This car is personally one of my favorite cars ever. I've been spending all day at school day dreaming about it. In 68' this was Dodge's compact car and this looked like all of the other dart GT's and GTS's with 340s and 383s but this one is special. Its the GSS, the GSS is basically the greatest sleepers ever. It was the only way to get the big block 440 under the hood of the compact car.

This got me thinking, whats the best sleeper to come from the factory ? I'm not talking about the guy who stuck a 2-Jz in his 240 wagon I'm talking a car that rolled out of the factory like that.

There are a lot of good candidates for that title, I'm a huge Chevy guy so ill list a couple I think could be considered. I'm going to exclude the original ZL-1 and COPO cars because those were technically true production cars since they were built using a different system than other cars.

1966 Chevy II L79- this little car was a hemi killer. With its light weight and 327ci/350hp motor and a 4 speed this thing was a rocket.

1967-1968 Camaro L30/M20 combo. These were true sleepers because very few people knew about then when they were new. When you checked the boxes for a 327/275hp motor and the M20 4 speed you got a car that was just a tenth slower than a ss 350 car but was not wildly badged or pronounced and with a tune could be very fast.

1970 Monte Carlo SS 454. Two very small badges gave any clue that grandma had a big block.

This isn't the ultimate sleeper, but still kind crazy. the 20th anniversary edition Trans Am. It had a Twin Turbo engine that produced 300 hp and went 0-60 in the mid 4's. It was quicker than the 'vette that year which is why I say it is more of a sleeper. GM downgraded all the figures on paper to make the 'Vette faster. On paper the Vette had 255 and this had 250

W220 S65 AMG. Not just saying this because I own one, hear me out. 485,000 W220's were built during it's 7 year lifespan, and during those years and the years following, they were a dime a dozen here in NYC. Now that the W221 is a dime a dozen here, it even looks dated. To the average person, it definitely doesn't look like a fast car— visually there's not much separating it from the standard S class. However, it's faster in the quarter mile than the original Gallardos and I can personally attest to it being faster than a 458 on a highway speed roll-on. It has the same amount of torque as the 458 and F430 combined .

01/28/2014 at 14:54

Kinja'd!!!0

Now we are getting into the blurred lines between dealer specials and factory production.

As far as Baldwin motions-no because Baldwin was the dealer while motion was a speed shop. Their cars were never COPO cars they were always a transplant car because Motion would do more speed parts. Their cars were very obvious.

Now cars from Berger, Dana, or Nickey Chevrolet could be more sleeper but still stuck out due to different hoods and being full of speed parts.

Yenkos are the closest to pure stock because his cars were just COPOs with decals and nicer wheels.

Kinja'd!!!

A small number of 1962 Catalinas and other Pontiacs were built with a 421 cu in (6.9 l) Super Duty V8 with two four-barrel carburetors and 405 hp (302 kW), as a US$2,250 option (when the base Catalina listed at US$2,725) along with various "over the counter" performance options offered by Pontiac including aluminum bumpers and even lighter frames with drilled holes (which were dubbed the "Swiss Cheese" frames).

Two cars sold only in Europe might have been faster: the handmade BMW E34 M5 and Alpina B10, selling for the equivalent of $59,905 and $109,500, respectively."
